TheRealSharon's Blog

Welcome to my Spotlight Sunday! Every Sunday I put someONE or someTHING I love IN the Spotlight!

Anyone is welcome to use the idea on their own blog and spotlight whoever or whatever THEY choose, but if you do, please use my lovely graphic that my friend made somewhere in your post to show that the idea came from here! And I would love it if you left the link in my comments, so I could go check out what YOU spotlighted!

Happy Easter, first of all!

Today, I am spotlighting the Sugar N’ Spice VoxBox I got last week from Influenster. <—Click to find out more information about this company.

sugarnspice  Above is a picture of what my box looked like when I opened it up. This was my second box from them, the first being the Holiday Vox Box in January, and I was just as excited this time to see what I got to try!

Here are the items and my opinions:

Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer Total Moisture

First of all, I use body lotion every once in awhile, but I don’t usually use moisturizer. I’ve been told I SHOULD…I guess since I’m getting older, but it just always seemed like too much work and I am very low maintenance! I read the simple instructions on the back and sprayed this on my legs and arms. It says to spray in circles, but I just sprayed in a line down my arms and legs one by one and then rubbed it in. Really simple and easy and just a minute later, my arms and legs were dry and felt nice and soft. Since then, I’ve used it a few times in getting ready just because I LOVE the smell of it and it really makes my skin so soft! 🙂 Supposedly this stuff sells for $7.99 for a 6.5 oz. can so I hope this stuff lasts awhile because that’s a bit pricey for me, but I’ll keep my eyes out for coupons if I have to, because I am now a fan!

I love the concept of this stuff. It’s a completely 100% all natural sweetener made from monk fruit. Unfortunately, I don’t use sweeteners like this. I don’t like tea or coffee and the Vox Box came with a booklet of  few recipes but every one of them has more carbs than what I like to eat for a meal, so..I have to confess I haven’t had a chance to try this. I don’t know if I could just add a bit to plain water or what. My mom uses Splenda all the time, though, and I will probably wind up giving this to her.

Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Oil Controlling Towelettes

I had never heard of this company before. I love that this product is natural. It’s been awhile since I have regular used a product similar to this and then it was Neutrogena, Noxema, and other brands to help me from breaking out. Again, I am low maintenance so washing my face consists of soap and water instead of a big routine usually. I like that these come individually packaged where you could take some with you and just clean your face any time you want. I think they clean your face really well and it feels good going across my skin, but I don’t know yet overall, if it will end up making my face less oily over time. I do love the simplicity of these and will definitely use them! I also received 5 $2 off coupons for any Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Product and they also carry other products to cleanse and tone so I may have to try out other stuff by them!

Colgate Optic White Regimen: Toothpaste, Mouthwash, and Toothbrush

It took me awhile to try these out because I already had a toothbrush and toothpaste and I like to wait until I NEED something, but I finally tried these out a few days ago. It’s supposed to make your teeth whiter within 5 days…we will see, although, if you want to know, ask, because I don’t like showing off pictures of my crooked teeth…ugh! Before, I was using a regular toothbrush and I DID feel like this one was brushing them better and the tongue and cheek scraper was definitely cleaning my cheeks as I brushed the sides of my teeth! The toothpaste has a really heavy overpowering flavor that was almost too much for me but I’m guessing it has something to do with what helps your teeth get whiter. There’s these little cup looking things in the brush that seem to hold the toothpaste better than a normal brush and really make sure the toothpaste gets everywhere in your mouth, whereas, with my old brush, the toothpaste sits on top until it gets pushed over the side and falls off. I’m not a big mouthwash fan in general….maybe because I have a strong gag reflex, but I gave it a try and again, strong taste that bothered me. I plan to continue using the brush and toothpaste, but not sure if I will use the mouthwash all the time, maybe just once in awhile.

belVita Breakfast Biscuits

The name makes me think of biscuits as in butter biscuits but these were actually big oval shaped cookies. These are full of a lot of good for you stuff and is said to give you energy through the day. Mine were Brown Sugar Cinnamon flavors and they are more carbs than I normally eat in a meal, but I wanted to give them a try. I ended up eating one of them and found it pretty good and filling, too, considering I just ate one. I could see eating all 4 as really filling me up. I gave the rest to my husband and he said they were really good! I want to try their Blueberry flavor, though, cause I’m just not a huge fan of Brown Sugar Cinnamon in general, but I think these are a great on the go breakfast or even snack!

As always, you may answer these questions in your own post or in the comments section!

This 5 Question Friday was brought to you by:

On to the questions!

1. How often should adults have birthday parties? For as long as they want to! I know some people think at a certain age, you should only have parties for the milestone birthdays, but I say, if you want to have a birthday party at 34 or 56, etc., have it! Who cares? 🙂

2. What was your room decorated like when you were a child? When I was 11 and under and living in Austin, there were always either friends of my brother or my sister and her kids living in my room so it was decorated like a grownup’s room for the most part and I stayed in my mom’s room and slept in her huge water bed with her. When I moved to Lufkin, I got my own room to myself that was upstairs and it was peach colored, but we painted it Lavender and I had lace curtains and girly decor…at one point, my walls were covered in Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, N*sync, etc. LOL up until I graduated from high school

3. Do you have any traditions for Easter? If so, what? and do you have a why behind that? I go to church with my family and then we have lunch together and just spend time’s what we’ve always done. When I was little, I would get an Easter Basket full of candy and a stuffed animal. Going to church has to do with the Christian background of Christ rising from the dead.

4. Do you get Good Friday off? If so, any plans? I wish I had a job where I could either have it off or even work, I don’t care! Since I don’t then, I’m home anyways and earlier, I took my mom to the grocery store and running errands.

5. Did you wear hats & white shoes to church on Easter? (Or was that just in the South?) OK…First of all, just cause you’re from the South doesn’t mean you wear hats to church. I can count on one hand the number of people I have seen wear hats at every church I have been to. White shoes, usually. When I was little, my mom would get me white dress shoes with the lacy socks and a pretty dress..she might have got a matching hat one year but I’m not sure..that was the 80’s so it’s possible. Since I’ve gotten older, I might wear white sandals, but it could also be another color that looks “spring”..this year I have silver sandals. I don’t know anyone wearing hats, although this might be more based on the type of church you go to, because I’ve seen a l0t of Pentecostals wearing hats and black women as well. Not to stereotype, just what I have honestly seen growing up in Texas. Hats are not a typical Southern thing…at least not that I have seen in the past decade or so.

{March 28, 2013}   Late is a Four letter word

To clarify my title, I’m not just stating the obvious, that L-a-t-e is 4 letters. Late to me is like a bad word. I simply HATE being late somewhere and would rather be extremely early than even one minute late. I suppose a part of this has to do with lateness tending towards people staring at you and being the center of attention. I may not be SHY Sharon anymore, but I don’t want to be the center of attention every time I go somewhere either. “Fashionably late” is awkward to me. Even if I feel especially confident that day, I really don’t want all eyes critiquing me.

But more than ME being late somewhere, I especially dislike when others are late. If you tell me you’re going to meet me at a certain time and you show up 30 minutes later, I may smile and tease you about your lateness, but inside I am growling like a tiger…Seriously! It’s not that I’m impatient, it’s really not. I just have always felt it’s a matter of respect. I can understand that life happens sometimes. If you have a flat tire, ran out of gas, etc., that’s understandable and I can get over it. If you’re still getting ready to go out when you should already be somewhere, that’s not a good excuse, that just means you need to learn better time management. If you decide to run an errand on the way and you got held up by traffic, that’s not a good excuse to me, that also means you should have left home earlier if you were going to run the errand or had enough respect that you chose to do the errand later because you already promised to be somewhere at a certain time and you don’t want to show up late. It’s just good manners, right?

Yea…I have some close friends who are late a lot and I love them regardless and I have come to just expect lateness out of them. At the same time, I find myself wondering how they ever make it to work on time or doctor’s appointments. The thing is, I’m sure they DO make it to those places on time, so what does that leave me thinking? Is work or school, etc. more important than being on time to meet a friend? Because I don’t see it that way. Whenever I tell a person I will meet them at such and such time, I plan to meet them THEN, not 30 minutes late. I don’t like to keep people waiting because that’s their time being wasted. Some people have less free time to waste than others and to be honest, Time is really precious for everyone, if you stop and consider it. So being on time is a sign that you truly respect someone and value not only YOUR time but theirs as well.

If I tell a friend I will meet them around 5, though, I might show up 10 minutes before and I don’t mind if it’s 5:15, because in that case, I come prepared to read or do something else, knowing it’s sort of an open time slot, which could be cause the person has things to do before they head out to meet me and they can’t be definite with the timing. That’s fine and I only consider THIS late if they show up at 6 without prior notice that they are running behind.

For those of you who tell a specific time, such as 6:30 and you show up at 7…..I still love you as a friend, but realize I DO feel upset when you constantly do this. I tried to keep my feelings under wraps, but I think it’s important for everyone, not just people who know me, to come to the realization that being late is just disrespectful WHEN you could have been early or even on time. Try to respect others and their time better, please. Somewhere someone is sitting right now and impatiently waiting on someone else who is taking their time and not caring that another’s is being wasted on them. 😦

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading? “The Language of Flowers” by Vanessa Diffenbaugh (So far, I LOVE this book and unless things change before the end, I can see this being one of my faves of the year!)

What did you recently finish reading?

“The Portable Obituary: How the Famous, Rich and Powerful really died” by Michael Largo

“When Doctors Don’t Listen: How to avoid misdiagnoses and unnecessary tests” by Leana Wen and Joshua Kosowsky (Must read)

“The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman (This was SO worth squatting down in the juvenile section of the library to find! I loved it so much and highly recommend it!)

“Girl Land” by Caitlin Flanagan

What do you think you’ll read next? I have 5 more library books to read and I’m not sure which one I will read next…Maybe “The Abstinence Teacher” by Tom Perrotta, but we’ll see!

{March 26, 2013}   Angels in Disguise

I believe in Angels. In fact, I’d like to believe that not only do Angels watch over us on Earth but that are people who are in a way, angels, in disguise. The ones who go above and beyond, who do for others over themselves, the ones who are always around to lend a helping hand or a listening ear; these are angels on Earth that have yet to earn their wings.

A few weeks ago, I believed I met one of these angels on Earth, although this person might disagree with me. Just another sign of a true Angel: humility. You may disagree yourself with me, but in my eyes I met an angel.

My devoted readers know I love to read and you MAY know that I have recently become a huge fan of an Indie writer named Kimberly Kinrade. I love her books and when she releases a new Ebook, I try to get each and every one. Awhile back, she started a new thing called, “A Gathering of Tales” where you can sign up to get sneak peeks of her books and short stories every month BEFORE they go public. I was excited about this and planning to join and at $15 for a regular year membership, it wasn’t exactly UNaffordable, but I just didn’t have the disposable income to get it right NOW, you know? Which was fine, because I had every intention to set aside money when I could and get it later on down the road. And I let her now I really WANTED to join but I would have to save money first. End of story..or was it?

Not too long after I said that on the public wall, I got an instant message from Kimberly letting me know that a mysterious benefactor had seen my message and paid for my membership for a year. My first reaction was…Are you serious? I was in shock! Then my second reaction was to almost cry, literally. I barely held tears back. I just couldn’t believe a complete stranger would do that! Some may argue that $15 isn’t that big of a deal, but for people on tight budgets, it IS! For someone who doesn’t even know me to spend $15 of THEIR hard earned money on ME, for whatever reason, just incredibly stunned AND touched me. I WAS told the benefactor later and I thanked her, but I’m not sure any of my words could really come close to describing how I really felt.

OK, so someone didn’t donate money to help me survive a disease or something. It was a $15 membership for an author, which some might roll their eyes at and think, Big Deal! Well….it was a big deal for me and it made my day AND reminded me of how there are still good people in this world that care, even if you don’t know it. A complete stranger CARED about me. So, to me, my benefactor WAS an Angel on Earth and in disguise.

On another note, I also learned more about myself through the experience. One of the reasons behind the gifting, I was later told, had to do with me seeming “nice” when I post on the wall and talk to others. Who knew there was a complete stranger reading comments that had taken notice of MY comments and by my demeanor, judged me as a nice person? I guess it goes to show that people are really watching you ALL the time, even when you might not realize it, and your actions (even when you think no one is paying attention or cares) really DO matter. This makes me really take inventory of myself and how I act not only on FB or my blog but in the real world. Someone is going to be watching and while I LOVE that people have found me “nice” based on my posts in a group on FB, I also would love for everyone I come into contact with to think of me this way OR at least in a positive light. I try to be a good, nice person and when someone else sees me for that, I feel fulfilled and happy. There’s going to be people out there that judge you wrong, yes, and people that won’t like you regardless of what you do, but only you have control of YOU and how you act and react. Live your life where you can be proud of how you lived it!

And to the “Angel in disguise” who has gifted me, if she ever reads this, thanks again for reminding me of the good!

Woohoo! Yep, I’ve hit the 75 lb. mark! I lost 2 more pounds since last week and have finally made it to 75 total pounds lost! Now I’m ready to head straight ahead to the 100 mark and….I really think my husband should buy me something really special when I get there, huh? What do you think? 🙂

That’s all I have to say for today as far as my weight….I’m excited!

Picture on left is from today! :)

Picture on left is from today! 🙂

But…sadly, to add a somber note, my husband lost one of his grandfathers this morning. 😦 I lost both of mine when I was still young along with one of my grandmas and now just have one left. I know whenever she passes, it’s going to be hard on me and my family. I especially can’t imagine how his step mom and HER mom(the wife of the grandpa) are feeling. I have friends that have lost moms and friends that have lost a spouse but I’ve never faced either of these things as of yet and just thinking about losing either my mom OR my husband is just so incredibly depressing. Losing people you love just sucks…honestly. My heart goes out to my husband and his sister and his step mom and grandma as well as the rest of their family during this time. I can only imagine what they are feeling right now but they are in my thoughts and prayers! If you would like to send positive thoughts and prayers my hubby and his family’s way, I know they would appreciate it! Thanks to all of you in advance!

Today I am spotlighting a site called Tanga, which MIGHT sound like it has something to do with Manga(type of comics) but it doesn’t. It’s actually a very cool deals site where you can shop! They always have Daily Deals, which can be sent to you by e-mail as well as special sales going on all the time. They have a decent sized inventory but it’s not huge and it’s constantly changing all the time. The items are usually high quality but for a lot cheaper. I have purchased from them twice in the past, once for a Rolling Stones magazine subscription, a year for $3.99! and the second time was for a shirt for my husband(with shipping, I believe it was about $9). My husband loves his shirt! I’m not for sure on the exact wording, but it basically says to only trust guys who like big butts…cause they can not lie.

Their site has a different contest every month and this month’s is for a brand new RCA 42″ LED HDTV! Enter here for your chance to win. It’s really easy to sign up! One thing I REALLY love about this site is that they’re a small company of 15 people who really care and will help you out. While you’re on Tanga checking them out, you may also want to check out the two other sites that are apart of their family!

LOLShirts is pretty much what it sounds like! A site full of t-shirts that make you laugh or smile. Currently on sale for $7.99 is a shirt that states, “Dear Algebra, stop asking us to find your x. She’s not coming back.” This site carries plus sizes up to 5x and sizes above XL are just .99 more with $2 flat shipping per shirt. Just like Tanga, their inventory is also currently changing and when you enter the contest on one site, it enters you in the contest with all 3 of them!

Lastly, the third site partnered with Tanga is BelleChic. With a constantly changing inventory of handmade items from around the world at up to 75% off, you are sure to find something you love here! This site has boutiques that run for different amounts of times showcases different designers from all over. For people who are huge fans of Etsy but have tighter budgets, I recommend giving this site a look!

I hope at least one of these three family sites interests you and you choose to become a fan of them just like me! 🙂

{March 23, 2013}   What’s with the Weekends?

I guess I should have specified “Saturdays and Sundays” in my title, because Friday is never a problem. It seems like the past few weeks, I am fine with knowing what to blog about during the week and then once it hits Saturday, I just blank out! Even on Sunday, when the main idea is already ready for it, I still struggle with deciding WHAT to spotlight each week.

So is it because I’m all out of steam on the weekends or does my muse take vacations then? Your guess is as good as mine, because I have as of yet come up with nothing! 😦

So what do I do when I blank out? Find questions I can answer on my blog! So here are 5 questions I found!

1. What is more difficult for you, looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into someones eyes when they are telling you how they feel?  This is a hard one…When I was younger and really, really shy, looking into someone’s eyes for any reason was difficult but now it’s usually not that difficult for either situation. It’s not so much difficult whether I am speaking or someone else is speaking, but the context of the conversation that would make it difficult. Say, for instance, the other person is being really mean and hateful…in THAT case, you want to look away. If they are being very friendly, then no problem. If you are telling someone you did something wrong or having to maybe disclose something embarrassing or very personal, it would be hard for me to look in the other one’s eyes. If I’m just having a regular conversation and everything’s cool, then again, no problem! It just all depends on the context!

2. Think of the last time you were REALLY angry. WHY were you angry? Do you still feel the same way? Driving in morning traffic..I try not to be angry when I’m driving but when people beep at me for not moving quick enough when there are tons of cars coming and not enough time for me to get out there….or they don’t use their signals and whip in front of me and I have to slam my brakes on…it’s just really hard sometimes. I’m obviously not STILL angry because it’s been over 24 hours but thinking of the moment does make me frustrated!

3. You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You have enough time to make ONE phone call. Who do you call? What do you tell them? It would kind of depend on WHO was with me….If I was alone(which I don’t know why I WOULD be), then I’d probably call my husband. If my husband was with me, I would call my mom…and I could probably go on and on depending on who was with me. Can one phone call me a conference call so I can talk to more than one person? I mean, I could get the one person to dial the others? 😉 Yea, I am trying to cheat obviously!

4. You are at the doctor’s office and he has just informed you that you have approximately one month to live. Do you tell anyone/everyone you are going to die? What do you do with your remaining days? Would you be afraid? I don’t know if I would tell everyone, but I would tell all the people that are closest to me because if it was the other way around, I would want to know. I would try to spend my last days doing the things I loved the much and I wouldn’t worry about cleaning or watching what I ate or sleeping for that matter! I would want to spend time with the ones I love the most and make the most of the time I had left. Yes, I would be afraid…not going to lie but I would hope I could eventually be at peace with it and live my last days to the extent that I felt ready to leave this earth.
5. You can have one of the following two things. Which do you choose? Why? Love and Trust. This has to be a trick question because you really CAN’T have one without the other…you can’t love someone without trust and you can’t trust someone without love! Love without trust means nothing so at first, I wanted to say trust but for trust to exist, you have to have love so there’s really NO correct choice here.

As always, you may answer these questions in your own post or in the comments section!

This 5 Question Friday was brought to you by:

On to the questions!

1. What advice would you give a newly married couple? I wouldn’t give them the old generic saying of “Don’t go to bed angry” lol         I would tell them that the newness of being married won’t last forever so enjoy it while it’s there and as the marriage goes on, you’re going to go through some tough times. I think ANY couple who says their whole marriage has been absolutely perfect is full of it….I’m sorry but if someone comments here saying theirs is…well, I don’t believe you! There’s a reason why people say certain years are the hardest, like the 7 yr. itch(which I am about 3 years away from still). The truth is the newness of love and marriage gradually fades over time, you get used to each other and things don’t necessarily feel the same. You’re going to look at each other differently a few years down the road and you’re going to learn about every disgusting and annoying habit each other has and some of them might cause you to shake your head and wonder what the heck happened to the one you married, lol. Marriage gets harder as you go along, NOT easier, so when you say, “I do” prepare yourself for the vow you said! Be prepared for the worse and not just the better, for the poorer and not just the richer and the sicker and not just the good health. And when you hit the tough patches, try to remember the things that made you fall in love with each other. Learn to compromise and talk things over and always make time for each other….and LISTEN. Never stop listening. The best parts of marriage are the times when you have gone through the tough times that you never thought you would conquer and you come out the other side with a new appreciation and love for the other. 🙂

2. Who does more laundry around your house? Neither of us…we have a laundry room at our apts. but it costs a lot to use the machines so my Mom is actually kind enough to let us take our laundry to my Nanny’s and she actually does it for us….yes, I am spoiled

3. What items, if any, do you prefer to buy organic or make yourself? I’m not a fan of cooking so I prefer to buy as much as I can already made. I DO cook my own fish with my own seasonings, though, to cut carbs. As far as organic, I buy organic spinach and broccoli a lot but not so much cause it’s organic…I just like the taste better?

4. What book/TV series would you recommend for a friend on bedrest? “Forbidden Trilogy” by Kimberly Kinrade 🙂 If you don’t mind “adult scenes” then the Seduced Trilogy by her….”Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier also because that’s one of my favorite books ever! For TV shows….If you have Netflix, “Xena the Warrior Princess” or “Charmed” 🙂 I love those two shows!

5. So, they say it’s Spring now…what does your “spring” look like at this very moment? 85 degrees…ugh! BUT we have a chance of rain tomorrow that is supposed to make the next few days only get into the 60’s 🙂 YAY!
