{November 20, 2011}   Merry Christmas OR Happy Holidays?

It’s that time again. The time when controversy will be had for saying Merry Christmas instead of the more politically correct Happy Holidays. Just to throw this in there: If it’s truly Separation of Church and State, since when did Politics get to tell me whether I can say Merry Christmas or not?

Obviously, I say, “Merry Christmas” and at least in the area I live in, I, as of yet, have not been reprimanded and told that I am wrong. If I ever am, you can bet I will stand up and say, “You can say what YOU want and I will say what I want!”  If another person has an issue with saying “Merry Christmas” or having a “Christmas” tree, then they can call it whatever they want. Call it “Happy Merry Time” and call your Tree a “Holiday” Tree and I could personally care less. As long as you let ME say Christmas, I will let you say what you want. This is really all another case of “If you want me to tolerate you, then learn to tolerate me.” If you force ME to say “Happy Holidays”, then that’s offensive to me because I’m not forcing YOU to say, “Merry Christmas.”

I realize and respect there are other religions that don’t celebrate Christmas because they celebrate Hannukah, Kwanzaa, etc. I have no issue with that and if I KNOW you celebrate a different holiday, I will wish you a Happy Hannukah, Kwanzaa, etc. If I say, “Merry Christmas” and you don’t celebrate it, feel free to politely, but not rudely tell me what you do celebrate and I will respectfully apologize and correct that matter. I think the whole “Happy Holidays” was originally created to avoid this issue so it could sweep all the holidays under one umbrella, but if you’re a Hannukah or Kwanzaa supporter, would it bother you to have to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Happy Hannukah” or Kwanzaa? And what if the Menorah was changed to a “Holiday Eight Day Candle” to be considered Politically correct? Would you take issue with that?

I just personally think politically correct has gone way too overboard. What do YOU think?

Giving Thanks Day 20: Today, I give thanks that although it may be considered politically incorrect, I can still say “Merry Christmas” and not have to worry that I will get thrown in jail or killed for it. At least not yet. I fear a day will come when that might happen, unless people can grow up and let people celebrate what THEY want without being bossed around. Our country is supposed to be the land of the free, NOT the land where you can only say and do what the government wants you to!
