{October 31, 2011}   Mirthful Monday Meets HALLOWEEN

First of all, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! May everyone have fun with whatever plans you have and be safe today! Since today is also Mirthful Monday, this week’s post is all about Halloween funnies! 🙂

Top 10 Signs You’re at a Bad Halloween Party

10) Bobbing for Turnips
9) A carved watermelon in the window
8) Most abused substance: Candy Corn!
7) During game of Poker, when you lose a hand, you REALLY lose a hand!
6) No one enters the “Squeal Like A Pig” Room
5) Woman dressed as a witch actually turns the party’s drunk into one of the Budweiser Frogs.
4) Everyone uses one of those Monster Eye Straws from Taco Bell to drink from the punch bowl
3) Instead of “Monster Mash”, host decides to play the HANSON CD non-stop
2) Several scantily clad women standing by a bedroom door give new meaning to the phrase “Trick or Treat”. They’re all transvestites!
1) Roseanne shows up in her Pamela Anderson Baywatch costume

Not sure about YOU, but #3 would scare me to death! AH!

Wolfman

The Wolf Man comes home one day from a long day at the office. “How was work, dear?” his wife asks. “Listen! I don’t want to talk about work!” he shouts. “Okay. Would you like to sit down and eat a nice home cooked meal?” she asks nicely. “Listen!” he shouts again. “I’m not hungry! I don’t wanna eat! Alright! Is that alright with you? Can I come home from work and just do my own thing without you forcing food down my throat? huh?” At this moment, the wolf man started growling, and throwing things around the apartment in a mad rage. Looking out the window, his wife sees a full moon and says to herself, “Well, I guess it’s that time of the month.”

I sort of feel sorry for this dog....

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!

{October 30, 2011}   Halloween Jams

I just thought I would share some great Halloween tunes to get you in the Halloween spirit tomorrow. Some of these are spooky and ooky and others will just make you laugh! Enjoy!

1) Monster Mash-Can you have Halloween without this song? Seriously? An oldie but goodie! 🙂

2)Thriller by Michael Jackson-Another obvious song to pick! Great song and creepy video, I remember watching this as a little girl and being entranced by it! This is a super long music video, by the way, at over 13 minutes….they don’t make many videos like THIS anymore! If you have never seen this video, you really MUST watch it at least once!

3.)House of 1000 Corpses Theme Song-Creepy music here!

4.)Ghostbusters Theme Song-This is a fun and kid safe song! 🙂

5.)Walking Zero by Sneaker Pimps-This is a song by a band from way back in 1997…I admit to being a fan of their music and sound and I still love the album this song came off of…While I’m not sure if it can rightfully be called a creepy song, the mood is somber throughout but a very “catching” beat…and I have yet to figure out why  there is “blood on my shoes”

6.)Tubular Bells by Robert Miles…Better known as the Exorcist Theme Song-One of the MOST creepiest movies ever, in my opinion AND one of my favorite horror movies

7.)The Howling by Within Temptation-One of my favorite bands of all time…I was going to put this anyways but apparently there’s a newer version of the video that works for this even more, so yay! I dare you to check this out!

8.)Calling all the monsters by China Anne McClain-Ok, I admit here and now I still watch Disney shows AND I’m not a parent so make fun of me all you want! For those with kids that love Disney, you may or may not have heard this song from the star of the Disney Show A.N.T. Farm….This is a family friendly, fun Halloween song

9.)Living Dead Girl by Rob Zombie-Cool black and white movie effects in the video with a zombie girl, what’s more Halloween than that? And actually, 95% of his songs could probably fit in the Halloween, spooky category

10.)”This is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas

11.No one Lives Forever by Oingo Boingo-The video with this has Disney Halloween scenes

And that’s all, folks! I know there are other more popular and well known ones I could have picked, but I tried to pick some lesser known songs. Hope this put you in a Halloween spirit!

I heard about this Meme from Tom Baker over at Morning Erection(For those who have never been to his blog, have no fear, it’s not really dirty and naughty..Don’t judge a blog by the name!) Here is the information on what it’s about, copied from his post and if you’re interested, stop by his page and tell him you want to join!

The idea of the meme is to post questions that many bloggers will answer and do so on the same day and time. Then visit other bloggers, read their responses and leave meaningful comments. Many new friendships were made last year that still exist today and many new readers were gained for many bloggers. Last year Sunday Stealing found my blog and posted their answers days in advance of the day we chose. No big deal, however this year I have taken steps to prevent the premature posting of answers. Here is how the 2011 meme will work.

1. If you want to participate, send a message to me(Tom Baker) using my contact page and in turn I will email you a copy of the meme questions.

2. You will compose your answers in a post along with the Meme graphic (grab from above) and schedule the post for December 11th at 12.01 am based on your time zone. Last year everyone posted at 12.01 but with 24 time zones we spent a lot of time waiting for some blogs to get posted. This year all posts will be simultaneous (data to be posted at a later date) based on time zones and not clocks.

3. A master list of everyone participating will be generated and posted along with your answers in December so you will be able to pick whose blogs you would like to visit.

Community Network Rules of Participation

You must agree not to post your answers until everyone else does.
You must agree that you will visit at least five blog links that you have never visited before and leave a comment on their responses.
You must answer each of the twenty questions and do so with more than a simple yes or no response.
You must post the entire Master Meme Blog List of blogs participating, regardless of how long the list may grow to be, below your answered questions.
You must title your post the same as everyone else, “Community Network Meme 2011″.
You must direct all interested parties to Morning Erection’s Contact Page to get the questions. You may not give them a copy of yours. Remember, we are trying to avoid Sunday Stealing from stealing and posting before December 11th.
You must promote the Community Network Meme at least once on Facebook or some other form of social media, even if it is just your own blog to get more bloggers to participate. Provide the link back to your original post so they can post this in its entirety on their blogs, just like we did.
If you would like to participate and write the post in your language and not English, feel free to translate it or you could post both translations.
Make sure to either vote for or like the post appropriately if on the WordPress platform.

(It looks to be a fun meme and I am excited to participate! I would love to see some of my favorite bloggers join!)

Welcome!

Three Days until Halloween!

As always, you may answer these questions in your own post or in the comments section!

This 5 Question Friday was brought to you by:

On to the questions!

1. Do you prefer cotton, silk, or flannel sheets? For bed sheets, probably cotton because silk feels nice but it’s also slippery LOL I like silk pillow cases though and am currently sleeping on one, I just love how it feels to rest your head on silk and it’s also supposed to be good for your hair! 🙂

2. What time zone are you in? I’m in the Central Time Zone

3. What is your favorite part of the holiday season? Seeing family that I haven’t seen in way too long and then 2nd favorite is seeing them get excited about a present I bought them (I only wish I could afford more at times)

4. What is your favorite “wintry” drink? (It doesn’t have to be an “alcoholic” drink!) I’m pretty much a Mountain Dew girl year round….but I guess Hot Chocolate would be a good wintry drink because it’s chocolatey AND it warms you up!

5. In your opinion, what is the worst job in the world? I could probably come up with quite a few answers here but any time where you have to clean up “human or animal waste” in any way is gross…I know it’s also necessary and I admire those who do those sorts of jobs but eeks! Disgusting! Also crime scene cleaners…not only do they have to clean some horrible looking stuff but also being exposed to the horror stories of what happens to people would be emotionally draining!

{October 27, 2011}   Bittersweet Memories

You’ve grown up so fast. I still remember the little chubby baby who ran around in her diapers annoying her older sister. I remember during Nanny and Papa’s 50th Wedding Anniversary when you went to hide in the closet and my pinky finger got in the way. It hurt really bad and the tears came and I felt even sadder to know that love could sometimes cause physical pain. A moment went from such fun to horror at the sight of my bleeding finger. I quickly forgave and moved on, realizing we were both young and accidents happen. There was a short period of time where we clashed a bit and I shook my head and wondered what was I going to do with this rambunctious little niece of mine?

Time passed, we both grew older and it was like that space of time never existed. In fact, some times I look back in my memory and it feels like it really WAS just a dream and we always got along, good as gold. You and your sisters lived with us for a few years here and there and it started to seem as if I had these 4 younger sisters instead of 4 extra nieces. Then the time came for you and your sisters to move back up North and I cried after you left. I cried for all of you as if my sisters were moving away, never to return. The peace and quiet of the house that I thought I always wanted quickly got old and I wished for all the singing and dancing and even the yelling. Our house felt like a ghost of what used to be. For a time, I wasn’t like an only child whose older siblings had gone away and left home because while you were there, there was always someone to watch a movie with. There was always someone to play games with. Now that you were gone, I never felt so lonely in my life.

Years past and every time I saw you and your sisters, I jumped for joy. I missed you all so very much and awaited your return with the excitement of a young kid on Christmas morning. I tried to make the time last as long as possible before the day I knew would come; the day you would leave once again. I hated the times when 2 years or more would pass before I saw you again. It was sheer torture. Somehow I always hung on for the next time, though.

Social Media allowed me to have more contact with you than ever before. I could now hear about your life and feel like I was actually a small part of it, instead of just an outsider. I would still wish to be there for big events and parties, to share each moment with you. The day I got engaged, I wanted to include you and all my other nieces in my special day, but the cost of that many people, I saw was unrealistic. Your older sister, Beckah became my Maid of Honor, which I doubt was a huge surprise for anyone, knowing how close we were. I put some of my closest friends as bridesmaids and I wished I had room for all my nieces, too. The day I had a best friend back out of being a bridesmaid should have been a sad and depressing day, but instead I was secretly happy. I now had an excuse to add another niece in under the guise of making the numbers fit….5 groomsmen needed 5 bridesmaids, right? I now had a chance to add ONE niece, but it also came with the fact that the other 4 nieces I didn’t pick might feel left out. I took my chances, though and picked you. You were the next niece, closest in age, that I had become closest to in our later years. I felt like you were also a good friend of mine now and I wanted you to be a bridesmaid even before one of mine backed out. Immediately, I felt like the chance opened up for a reason and it was meant to be. I was so excited to ask you and even more excited when you accepted.

Back in 2009 was the last time I saw you, back when you were a bridesmaid at my wedding. I have since seen 2 of your sisters a couple times, but not you, your older sister or my two great nephews. I miss you ever so much and watch on the side lines as you grow up each day. Since 2009, you have got engaged, while I looked at the pictures and smiled, crying happy tears about the little niece that would become a bride. You then got married at a little court ceremony, which I wanted to be at so badly, but cried those happy tears again at knowing you were so happy and had found a great man. Your marine man went off to war and I ached for what you would go through while he was away. I wished many times that I could see you and give you a great big hug I knew you probably needed many times over this past year. Now the time has come for you to move to another state, far away from not only me, but from your family and friends in Indiana. Your husband will be home shortly and I am filled with extreme happiness for you, as I know you have awaited this day for so long. I again cry those happy tears about you moving to a new home, seeing your husband again and taking the next step towards the future you two will have. I know your family and friends will be crying both happy and sad tears right now. Happy for the same reasons as me and sad because they will miss you the same way I have missed you all these years. I can understand a little bit of how they will miss you because I have been there and continue to be there, but my heart aches for my other nieces who have to say bye to their beloved sister, for my oldest sister and brother-in-law who have to say bye to their baby girl who is now a woman, for the friends who have to say bye to the one who brought laughter and joy to their lives for many years. We have to remember that it’s not forever and we will see her again. For some, maybe sooner than others, but this goodbye doesn’t mean forever. It’s more of a See you later.

To my niece Lydia, I love and miss you more than you know and I am so proud of the woman you have grown up to be. I am so happy for the new life that awaits you and I wish you and Dru the best that life has to offer you. May your days be filled with love and joy! Always know that I am just a virtual hug or shoulder away.

{October 26, 2011}   Weekly Photo Challenge:Opportunity

Double posting today!

For me, I wasn’t sure what pictures to post this week. Last week’s Possibilities felt like almost the same as this one, but then today as I wrote a post I am saving for tomorrow, I realized what I wanted to post. Sometimes life brings you opportunities and you take them and you’re rewarded, sometimes not. Other times, you may miss one or choose not to take one and you may regret it. Not always, though, there can be alternatives. You may skip an opportunity and end up realizing it was the right choice after all. The thing is, you never really know until afterwards. You never know until you take the risk. So you can take it or leave it, but if you take a risk and regret it, at least you have gained wisdom from it, right?

I have had missed opportunities in my life, for sure, but I choose to not regret them, and instead learn from them just like mistakes. One huge opportunity we all have each and every day is to tell the people closest to us how much we love them. To miss an opportunity to tell someone we love them is, I think, the biggest regret you can ever have. Today, I am posting pictures of some of the people I love most in my life and taking the OPPORTUNITY to say, I love you!

For all my family and friends that may not have pictures here, I love you! And to all my blogging friends, I also love you! 🙂

*Not all pictures were taken by me, some were taken by other friends and family*

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading? “How reading changed my life” by Anna Quindlen-I’ve been looking around for this book since Milka recommended it to me and I finally found it on BooksFree.com and just received it yesterday!

What did you recently finish reading? “The Blood Countess” by Andrei Codrescu-Interesting, but I would definitely warn you not to read if you have a problem with extremely gory descriptions as well as VERY sexual ones….No exaggeration, it’s the MOST descriptive book for both of those that I have ever read….

“Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith” by Jon Krakauer-Very educational about the beginnings of the Mormon religion(especially the Fundamentals) and enlightening…definitely thought provoking

What do you think you’ll read next? “The Day I turned Uncool:Confessions of a Reluctant Grown-up” by Dan Zevin-This is a comedic book recommended to me by my blogger friend Dayle, I also received this from BooksFree, and I am excited to read it next! 🙂

{October 25, 2011}   Spooky Towns

It’s getting close to Halloween and I’m sure we all have seen specials about Haunted locations and houses plus the many scary movies, but what about towns and cities with just plain creepy names? Do you know any? I was curious and came across quite a few I would like to share with you…..Some of the names make me glad I don’t live there!

  1. Accident, Maryland-A small town said to have 353 people back in 2000; a person from here is called an “Accidental”….I don’t know about you, but I would not like to go by that!
  2. Bad Axe, Michigan-Named after a badly damaged axe found at the future site of the city….Besides the fact that axes have been used in slasher flicks, I want to shake my head at the craziness of naming a city after an old axe….but maybe it’s just me!
  3. Bat Cave, North Carolina-not even a town OR a city, but rather an unincorporated community named after a mountain that was named after the cave at the foot of it that inhabits many bats
  4. Casper, Wyoming-OK, so Casper is known as the Friendly Ghost so this isn’t that creepy….I just felt like mentioning it; Casper wasn’t named due to ghosts but rather because of a Fort Caspar it was established near that helped people cross the North Platte River by offering ferries
  5. Cut off, Louisiana-The name just makes me think of being cut off from civilization and I hear the tune from “Deliverance” play in my ears! Not sure of the origin of the name, although it appears to be a translation of the French words, “La Coupe”, but a look on the map doesn’t show it to be too cut off 🙂
  6. Devil’s Elbow-in California AND Missouri- Double Creepy! Both are little communities, but that’s about all I could find about the CA location…as for the Missouri community, it’s located on the infamous Rt. 66 and was named for a bad place in the Big Piney River that it is situated on…the bad place being known as “devil of an elbow”
  7. Devil’s Lake, North Dakota-Named after Devil’s Lake, that runs nearby this city
  8. Frankenstein, Missouri-Supposedly named after a man named Gottfried Franken, who donated land to build a church in this community
  9. Little Hell, Virginia-a community where apparently there’s just a “little hell”?
  10. Half Hell, North Carolina-This one is taking a little and turning it into 50%….Couldn’t find anything about “Half Hell” but there is a place in North Carolina called “Providence” that was formerly known as “Hell’s Half Acre”
  11. Hell, Michigan-Could this be the location of Hell on Earth? There are quite a few theories on why this city was named “Hell” but this city definitely seems to love it! They have an ice cream shop here called “Screams Ice Cream”, a small general store called “Hell in a Handbasket”, and they have a car club called, “Just Hearse’N Around”. Just this year, they set a Guiness World Record for the Largest Parade of Hearses…if you like kitsch and craziness, this spookily named city might be a fun trip for you!
  12. Hell for Certain, Kentucky-I wonder if “Hell, Michigan” runs a competition against this area….The theory on the origin of this name was that a preacher coming home from the area was asked where he went and replied, “I have no idea, but it was hell for certain.” The only thing that IS certain is that Hell in Michigan is more famous…
  13. Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina-Interesting name origin here…Ships that wrecked near here would be scavenged for rum and some of it hidden in the sand dunes around this area. The English were then calling rum, “Kill Devil”, so the Hills became known as “Kill Devil Hills” or Rum Hills. Nearby this town is Kitty Hawk, cited as the location for the Wright Brothers airplane flights…the flights are actually said to have occurred HERE in Kill Devil Hills instead.
  14. Satan’s Kingdom, Massachusetts & Vermont-Both communities….nothing much else said…I guess his kingdoms are pretty secretive?
  15. Scary,West Virginia-located at the mouth of Scary Creek
  16. Slaughter, Louisiana-Recently designated a town in 2002…home of Slaughter Elementary School…Anyone else get chills from that?
  17. Slaughter Beach, Delaware-3 different stories about the origin….One is that it came from William Slaughter, a local postmaster. The second is that it was named after the horseshoe crabs that wash ashore every year and die…and the third comes from a local legend of a man who slaughtered inhabitants by cannon to prevent a massacre….Pick which one you prefer!
  18. Transylvania, Louisiana-named after Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky…which is still around today. The general store here sells Dracula and bat related merchandise. Way to make a profit out of your name!

And this is where I am ending the list, although there were many more names I could have included. Have YOU ever been to any of the places I mentioned? Do you know of any other spooky named towns that you would like to add to this list? I would LOVE to hear!

I just love when it gets close to Halloween and the TV starts playing all these scary movies. This weekend I have been glued to AMC, also known as the American Movie Channel, watching their monthly horror marathon called Fear Fest. Today, there has been a lot of Zombie movies and it will all wrap up with the second episode of the 2nd season of the show, Walking Dead. Awesome show. If you love zombie movies but you’ve never heard of this show, then you are missing out!

It’s basically about a zombie apocalypse where survivors are few and based on a comic series of the same name, although the comic writer has admitted to making changes here and there so his comic fans will stay surprised and interested. I have actually considered reading the comics, but they have been out so long that I am not sure how to get them from the beginning.

I know there are those that are not big fans of horror movies, but I just love them. They are my ultimate guilty pleasure, but one I will freely admit to. And come on, while there is definitely gore and a creep factor involved in zombie movies, there’s some humor too. For instance, in a movie I watched today called, “Flight of the Living Dead”, (as if flying wasn’t scary enough!), an older lady gets turned into a zombie and it’s apparent she has lost her teeth when she attacks one of the non-zombies. “Ah, she’s gumming me to death!,” he screams as he pries her loose. Comedy found in a frightening situation. I just love it!

Now off I go for more zombie fun possibly followed by Vampires….I dvr’d the previously unseen “From Dusk to Dawn” trilogy the other night to watch. Cheers to all my fellow horror movie lovers!
