{November 20, 2011}   Merry Christmas OR Happy Holidays?

It’s that time again. The time when controversy will be had for saying Merry Christmas instead of the more politically correct Happy Holidays. Just to throw this in there: If it’s truly Separation of Church and State, since when did Politics get to tell me whether I can say Merry Christmas or not?

Obviously, I say, “Merry Christmas” and at least in the area I live in, I, as of yet, have not been reprimanded and told that I am wrong. If I ever am, you can bet I will stand up and say, “You can say what YOU want and I will say what I want!”  If another person has an issue with saying “Merry Christmas” or having a “Christmas” tree, then they can call it whatever they want. Call it “Happy Merry Time” and call your Tree a “Holiday” Tree and I could personally care less. As long as you let ME say Christmas, I will let you say what you want. This is really all another case of “If you want me to tolerate you, then learn to tolerate me.” If you force ME to say “Happy Holidays”, then that’s offensive to me because I’m not forcing YOU to say, “Merry Christmas.”

I realize and respect there are other religions that don’t celebrate Christmas because they celebrate Hannukah, Kwanzaa, etc. I have no issue with that and if I KNOW you celebrate a different holiday, I will wish you a Happy Hannukah, Kwanzaa, etc. If I say, “Merry Christmas” and you don’t celebrate it, feel free to politely, but not rudely tell me what you do celebrate and I will respectfully apologize and correct that matter. I think the whole “Happy Holidays” was originally created to avoid this issue so it could sweep all the holidays under one umbrella, but if you’re a Hannukah or Kwanzaa supporter, would it bother you to have to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Happy Hannukah” or Kwanzaa? And what if the Menorah was changed to a “Holiday Eight Day Candle” to be considered Politically correct? Would you take issue with that?

I just personally think politically correct has gone way too overboard. What do YOU think?

Giving Thanks Day 20: Today, I give thanks that although it may be considered politically incorrect, I can still say “Merry Christmas” and not have to worry that I will get thrown in jail or killed for it. At least not yet. I fear a day will come when that might happen, unless people can grow up and let people celebrate what THEY want without being bossed around. Our country is supposed to be the land of the free, NOT the land where you can only say and do what the government wants you to!

{November 5, 2011}   Freedom? What Freedom?!

“We, the people of the United States.” Which “We, the people”? The women were not included. -Lucy Stone (Taken from the book, Wit & Wisdom of Famous American Women)

Lucy Stone was a suffragist in the 1800′s, who, I freely admit I had never heard of until I read this quote and looked her up. This quote was written at a time when women were not allowed to vote and had pretty much no say in anything. It is because of women like her that I, as a woman, have the freedom to state my opinion in this blog and can vote for whoever I choose. Unfortunately, sometimes I feel like we seem to be going backwards in a lot of ways even as we are going forward in time. I am NOT big on talking or ranting about political issues in any way so I tend to stay far away from them as much as possible, BUT recently I heard about something that happened that really infuriated me and bothered me. I just HAVE to rant about it and not be silent.

Here in America, we have Freedom of Speech, which is the right to speak without censorship. This includes vocal speech as well as written, but we all know, there ARE boundaries. We are not free to commit libel or slander someone, even though we all know politicians do this freely. We are not allowed to be overly obscene and we aren’t supposed to incite others into committing a crime. Other than those basics, we are supposed to be allowed freedom of speech.

That being said, I will get to the event that caused me frustration. One of my husband’s best friends was passing out flyers telling people about a wrestling show that was held last night in a small(as in less than 1,000 people town) about 15 minutes from where we live. While handing out the flyers, NOT forcing people to take them or come, just simply handing them out, his friend got stopped by a cop and ordered to LEAVE the town. WHY? An individual from another country saw the words, “Support our troops” at the bottom of the flyer and got offended, therefore calling the cops. Because of the one individual, he had to leave the whole town. Seriously? When I heard this story, I was offended personally and I know there are a lot of people in America that would be offended, especially anyone related to the troops as well as the troops themselves. No one was forcing anything on this man and he could have simply thrown away the flyers if he had been that offended. Should all Americans that support troops be silenced and disallowed to voice that?

Support means to maintain an institution or provide for it by supplying things it needs. We ALL actively support tons of things we may or may not agree with when we pay taxes. When we buy items at the store, the employees and the managers get some of that money and for all we know, they could be using it in ways that offend us. Unfortunately, we have to pay taxes and we have to pay for water, shelter, food, etc. I think people seem to have a deep misunderstanding of the difference between support and agreement. I realize there are people out there that do not agree with the war situation, they don’t agree with the fighting and they want it to end. The people over there fighting are some one’s husband, wife, mother, father, sister, brother, etc. Whether or not you agree with what THEY are ordered to do, I feel we ALL should at least respect they are doing their job. People should also respect the origins of their own freedoms. The only reason people from other countries can come to America, start a new life and have equal rights is because of Veterans who fought so we ALL could be free.

I do not know this guy’s story. Maybe soldiers killed his family or something, but he still is living in America where the only reason he has a better life is because people once upon a time fought so we ALL could have freedoms. Having the attitude where if someone mentions supporting the troops then you want to see them punished or removed from town is NOT a good way of getting people to sympathize with you or even relate to you…Like I said, supporting is not the same as agreeing.

Another definition of Support is to undergo or endure, especially with patience or submission; to tolerate. I like that definition for purposes of this rant because I feel this world has become obsessed with tolerance. But we seem to have failed to understand that tolerance can’t exactly be one sided. If a person can’t tolerate a little wrestling flyer because it says “Support our troops”, then how can he or she expect people that are veterans or strong troops supporters to have any desire of tolerating them? Just being honest here. You can’t have one sided tolerance. You can’t scream, “have tolerance, support me even if you don’t agree with me” while not doing the same yourself. Think of it as the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” “Tolerate others if you want them to tolerate you.” Think about it turned around….a flyer for wrestling with the words, “Support Foreigners”. A person gets offended and has the person kicked out of town…..For some reason, I think there would be a huge outrage to ensue and a big news story…but maybe that’s just MY opinion.

Giving Thanks Day #5: With this post, it’s hard to think about it and still remain thankful for freedom, but regardless of this incident, we still ARE further than we once were. I am thankful for being able to still express my views in a blog without the fear that I will be beaten or killed. There are other countries, that as a woman, if I had just said all I said, I would probably be hunted down and killed. Because of that, I AM Thankful for having Freedom….even when there are times, where Freedom seems Free only for those who say what the government or politicians would prefer for you to say. I fear a day when I will no longer be able to speak freely, but am thankful I still can for now!

The Results of the Weekly Photo Challenge Hidden Quiz!

Sorry, you had to read so much to get here…if you indeed DID, Thanks for that! :)

The #’s of the Pictures that were me and NOT my middle sister were:

2,3,5,7,9, and 10….The others were of my sister Sherri.

There were some good guesses…While #4 WAS my sister and not me, there’s a picture somewhere that looks a lot like that one but was from the newspaper, making it black and white….so Black and White wasn’t necessarily a give away that it wasn’t me!

Beckah-You only missed #3 being me, but since you’re family, well…..I can say Good Job but not declare you a winner….My hubby answered in person and got them all right! :)

Eliz-You said they ALL looked like me except for #6 and since that one is not me…..you missed 3, the 3 that were not me!

Dayle-All the ones you picked were right, except for one, #8′s my sister! :) And you missed 3, 9 and 10…so you missed 4, close!

PIP-Good job with #3, you were the only one besides my husband to guess that one right!

Looks like Eliz was the closest, but Dayle, you also were close, so I’m going to just say Congrats to both of you! :) Tune in tomorrow to see a post dedicated to both of you!

Thanks everyone who commented and guessed! :D

{July 4, 2011}   Happy Fourth of July!

Back in May, we had Memorial Day and I did a post about how it was a day of Remembrance, NOT Celebration. Now here it is the 4th of July, a day of Celebration BECAUSE of the people who we remember on Memorial Day.

The Fourth of July IS a day where you can have parties, spend time with your family and enjoy your FREEDOM. That doesn’t mean that you should ever forget the ones who died for your freedom and the ones who are still off fighting right at this moment, but today is a day that you CAN celebrate.

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.  ~Erma Bombeck

So to all those watching fireworks today, eating BBQ, or just staying home with the family and watching celebrations on TV, I hope you have a happy 4th of July!

To all those still over seas fighting, thank you so much for your sacrifices and giving us this day to celebrate. To the families of the ones over seas fighting, Thank YOU too for allowing your loved ones to serve our country and I pray that they will return home safe to you as soon as possible. A special shout-out to my niece Lydia: I am so proud to say that I have a niece married to a Marine and I am so thankful each and every day that he is out there doing something that so many aren’t able to do or aren’t brave enough to do. I pray each and every day for his safe return to you and you and him are always in my thoughts and prayers.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
~Lee Greenwood

Freedom is never free.  ~Author Unknown

Freedom of Speech is very much a topic that I have STRONG opinions about. I think it’s one of the most important freedoms we are blessed with in the United States and one that shouldn’t be taken for granted. I’ve also had it on my mind a whole lot lately and as I was looking at blogs the other day, I came across one where this lady was talking about people who were very obviously flaunting a message that she didn’t agree with but yet she respected their right to it. She had a couple of quotes listed as well and one of them really hit me to the core because it’s so in line with how I feel.

The quote was “If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all”. ~Noam Chomsky

I realize freedom of “expression” is more than just speech but it’s still such a true statement. We each have the privilege of speaking or expressing our opinions freely in America when so many people of other countries are not so lucky. People are attacked and even killed daily for speaking their minds. We are extremely lucky to be able to express ourselves publicly, through social media and blogs even, without the fear that others face. I don’t think this freedom should be taken lightly.

Nevertheless, I feel it is. Nowadays, it seems people are wanting to censor everything. Are we going forward with our freedoms or backwards? What was the purpose of us fighting for more rights if we are then going to turn around and try to take them away, a piece at a time?

I have my own personal beliefs that are unique to me. Some of them are firmly set in my mind and I see no swaying over them…others are not planted so tightly. Why? Because I feel that there’s too much in this world which I have not experienced that I SHOULD before deciding to plant ALL my views in concrete. That being said, I don’t consider myself easy to sway on even those views but more just that I am willing to be open minded and give ALL sides a chance. I have the freedom to do so and so does everyone else.

I despise the idea of censoring in general. Take for instance, banned books. I feel that we, as a people, should have the right to read whatever books or publications we so choose and make our own minds up as to whether the book is something we agree with or not. If not, simply put the book down and move on to another. Just because I don’t agree with what a book says doesn’t mean someone else shouldn’t be able to read it themselves and make up their own mind, right?

And even though I am a Christian, I wouldn’t want to see atheist publications censored any more than Christian ones. When it comes to politics, I believe Republican, Independent and Democratic literature, books, shows, etc. should all be available. Obviously, I, myself am not ALL parties and not ALL religions but for my own beliefs and views to be openly distributed then the opposite ones must also.

Like that quote, if we want freedoms for ourselves, we must also respect and allow that others with differing vies must ALSO be given the same freedoms. Once the opposite sides freedoms start to get chipped away at, you can count on the fact that YOUR freedoms will be next.

Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too.  ~Voltaire

I am thankful for all the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech.  ~Nancie J. Carmody

Every human being has a right to hear what other wise human beings have spoken to him.  It is one of the Rights of Men; a very cruel injustice if you deny it to a man!  ~Thomas Carlyle

I noticed just yesterday that one of my Facebook friends voiced her opinion regarding Osama’s recent death and one of “her friends” basically bid her good riddance because she didn’t agree. I found this very juvenile and added the first quote from this post to the comments section. It never ceases to amaze me how people get so offended when a person has a different opinion than them and they just refuse to hear it and walk away. If I defriended every person who doesn’t match up with every belief of my own, I would honestly have NO friends. I don’t think it’s possible to find someone who will agree with you 100% of the time. OK, there may be someone who has all the same integral beliefs as you do but along the line, there will be something, even if mediocre, that you differ on. No two people are completely alike…and the world would be a truly boring place if that were so. I love the fact that I have friends with different belief systems, different views and different opinions. Among them, there are many free thinkers and I think that’s a great and wonderful thing to be. It speaks volumes that my friends are smart enough to think about things on their own and come to their own conclusions. That the world is not forcing them to believe a certain way. I respect them all for their differences and when it comes down to it, a true friend is one that simply is a good person and genuinely cares about me. Their political beliefs, religious affiliations, even their sexual preference is no concern to me. I was not put on this Earth to be the judge and jury of what is right and wrong; God is the ultimate judge and it’s up to him to make the decisions. Again, this is my opinion. If you don’t believe in God or a god, that is your own choice, which you have the right to.

Another quote used in this person’s blog was this one: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.  ~Voltaire

That is how it should be! Defend the rights of others to speak their minds as well, even if it’s completely different from what YOU may believe! If they lose their rights then whose rights will they be coming after next?

Defend your right to have freedom of speech before you’re left with no freedom at all!
